Frida Kahlo – “They thought I was a Surrealist, but I wasn't. I never painted dreams. I painted my own reality”
Many aspects could lead our thoughts and interests to Frida Kahlo. One of those could be the image of cacti and of a strong and luxuriant nature, that was the background of her life and her paintings.
The artist is famous for her paintings, especially her symbolic and often dramatic self-portrait. A free and strong woman, an experimenter, impossible to be described in a word.
We can all find some answers in our own lives, there are many Frida Kahlos. There is Frida, the National icon of Mexico, her beloved country. Then of course Frida the avant-garde artist. Frida, the woman who could couple her femininity with her feminist nature. Frida the muse, wife of her compatriot Diego Rivera. A timeless Frida, symbol and source of inspiration for the fashion world too.
Her style colours life, sorrow and love with distinct traces – her dark brows, her colorful dresses, and the ribbons and flowers in her hair. Many of Kahlo’s iconic self-portraits include imagery of foliage and flowers from her garden. And flowers and plants themselves have a deeper and personal meaning: they were often picked from Frida’s own garden. Her own garden itself was another piece of art and life for this artist.
Oleanders, philodendrons, roses, sunflowers, calendulas, palms, ferns, agaves indigenous from Mexico, cacti, year-lasting plants with vivid colours and fruit trees.
Several iconic pictures from different artists portray Frida in front of massive cactus. Those plants are symbolic of strength, difficulties, and the will to live of somebody who went through extreme situations.
with everything and all the reasons that wake you up in a haste
and the demons that won’t let you sleep.
who can consume this world whole if he walks hand in hand with you;
someone who believes that his embraces are a perfect match with your skin.
who goes to paradise every time he looks into your eyes
and never gets tired of studying your expressions.
who supports you when you feel shame
and respects your freedom;
and isn’t afraid to fall.
You deserve a lover who takes away the lies
and brings you hope,
coffee,
and poetry.”
